What is Take Back The Night? Take Back The Night is an annual tradition throughout the US and globally. It is designed as a rally to bring awareness to issues surrounding violence against women. There is an emphasis on "Shattering the Silence", or creating an environment where survivors can feel comfortable telling others their stories. In America Take Back The Night is also a non-profit foundation started by Katie Koestner, a survivor of date rape and long time advocate for change in the way colleges deal with sexual assault issues. For a more complete history of Take Back The Night, and more information about the non-profit of the same name visit the Take Back The Night Website What is Take Back The Night in Gettysburg? In Gettysburg Survivors, Inc. has been carrying on the annual tradition of working closely with our local colleges to help with the organization of Take Back The Night events for several years. Each year is a little different, some activities our events have included are: candlelight vigils, open microphone platforms for anyone who wish to speak up about sexual violence, marches, and live music. We work closely with the Women's Center at Gettysburg College, and student groups at the Gettysburg campus of the Harrisburg Area Community College to organize this event. Though Take Back The Night events are historically concentrated on motivating and informing college age students community involvement is important to the success of the event. We are always looking for volunteers interested in helping with set up and clean up. We can also use help with flyer distribution to increase community awareness for this event, if you happen to stop by or work at places which have community information boards please consider contacting us for flyers. If you are interested in volunteering for this years Take Back The Night please call our administrative offices at 334-0589. |
